RR&D Brain Rehabilitation Research Center (BRRC)
The BRRC is a Center of Excellence in Gainesville, Florida, funded by the Rehabilitation Research and Development Service since 1999. The mission of the BRRC is to develop and test treatments that harness neuroplasticity to substantially improve or restore impairments of motor, cognition, and emotion that have been caused by neurologic disease or injury.
Because of the broad spectrum of symptoms and the complexity of neurologic injury and disease, the BRRC has developed a scientific strategy that will identify important variables and mechanisms involved in neurorehabilitation through:
> CLINICAL RESEARCH INITIATIVES, which develop innovative therapies for specific functional impairments, including problems with walking, arm function, speaking, or expressing emotion.
> A TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH INITIATIVE IN REHABILITATION NEUROSCIENCE, which uses animal models and behavioral, molecular, physiological, and anatomical techniques to identify key neural and behavioral factors that facilitate translation between basic and applied scientists.
> METHODOLOGICAL CORES, which develop state-of-the art technology to measure cognition, emotion, and motor function in order to precisely and reliably identify mechanisms of and effects of neurorehabilitation.
